A young man, who was allegedly mugged and thrown from a moving train in the capital's Kurmitola area, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hafizur Rahman, 25. His identity
was confirmed later in the day, after his death.
Hafizur, who worked at a resort named Shoilda in Joydebpur,
Gazipur, hailed from Charchingguri village under Chitalmari upazila of
Bagerhat.
Locals spotted him lying in a pool of blood beside the rail
line behind Kurmitola Hospital on Wednesday evening. Passersby rescued him and
first took him to Kurmitola Hospital. The victim was then admitted to DMCH at
around 9:30pm.
Inspector Md Habibur Rahman, in-charge of the DMCH police
camp, said two passersby admitted the injured youth to the hospital on
Wednesday night.
"He died while undergoing treatment on Thursday
morning. We could not initially learn his identity. It was confirmed around
noon," he said.
Foyez, one of the passersby, said he went to the spot after
seeing a crowd. "I saw the young man lying there, bleeding. Locals told me
muggers had attacked him on a Kamalapur-bound moving train and pushed him out
during a scuffle," he said.
Hafizur's elder brother, Hossain Sheikh, said his brother had left Gazipur on Wednesday on leave to travel to the family's village home in Bagerhat.
He usually took a train from Joydebpur to Kamalapur and then
a bus from Sayedabad. The family learned of his death through police on
Thursday morning. They came to Dhaka from the village and identified the body
at DMCH.
Joynal Abedin, officer-in-charge of Dhaka Railway Police
Station (Kamalapur), said the youth died after falling from a train in the
Kurmitola area. "It is yet to be confirmed whether he was pushed off the
train or fell in some other way. We are investigating the incident," he
said.
No case had been filed in connection with the incident until the filing of this report. The body has been sent to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
