Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam’s second wife, Mariam,
19, who apparently died by suicide at the NAM Bhaban, sometimes had to sleep on
the balcony beside Nazrul’s bedroom at the NAB Bhaban in Dhaka, police said.
The information was revealed in a police petition submitted
by investigating officer, Detective Branch Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin, to a
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court seeking the continued detention of
Nazrul.
According to the plea, Nazrul married Mariam through a
verbal marriage ceremony on 17 June 2026. Later, while living at NAM Bhaban
with his first wife, Maksuda Islam, 65, Mariam would sometimes sleep on the
balcony adjacent to their bedroom, according to information obtained during
interrogation.
The petition also said Nazrul had provided police with
further “crucial information” relevant to the case during interrogation, which
investigators were verifying.
According to court sources, the investigation officer Inspector
Mohammad Salahuddin produced the accused before the court after a four-day
remand and sought an order to keep him in jail.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Mahbubul Islam sought
bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing
both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that Gazi Nazrul
Islam be sent to jail.
Earlier, on the evening of 20 September, the hanging body of
Gazi Nazrul’s second wife, Mariam, was recovered from a flat at NAM Bhaban in
the capital. Later that night, police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first
wife, Maksuda, into custody.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case that night
accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, his wife Maksuda Islam and the deceased’s maternal
uncle, Obaidur Rahman, of abetting suicide.
The following day, the court granted four days’ remand for
Gazi Nazrul Islam and one day’s remand for Maksuda Begum. Later that night, the
investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan
Police.
On 22 September, Gazi Nazrul’s wife Maksuda Begum was sent
to jail after a one-day remand in the case. Another accused, Obaidur Rahman,
who was arrested in the case on 23 September, was also sent to jail by the
court on the same day.
The court, however, sent Gazi Nazrul Islam on a fresh
four-day remand in the case on 24 September.
