A Dhaka court on Monday placed a police member assigned to the material disposal section (Malkhana) of the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on a three-day remand after he was arrested with yaba in the capital’s Sutrapur area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Manjurul Islam passed the order after a hearing, said State Prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid.

Earlier, Sutrapur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Suman Kumar Chatterjee sought the remand for the accused.

The state prosecutor argued in favour of the plea, while defence lawyer Shahjalal Munshi opposed it and sought bail.

According to the case documents, Rezaul Karim is a constable working at the material disposal section of the CMM Court.

On 27 September, police detained him during a raid at a shop in Ward No 28 under Sutrapur Police Station and recovered 1,790 yaba tablets from his possession.

Police also seized Tk5,500 in cash allegedly earned from drug sales and a smartphone from him.

A case was later filed with the police station under the Narcotics Control Act.

Police said the accused could not provide any satisfactory explanation when questioned about the source of the yaba tablets, and he had allegedly been selling yaba tablets at various places in Dhaka for a long time for illegal profit.
