A court on Sunday sentenced fugitive accused Rezaul Islam to death for killing a seventh-grader in Savar’s Ashulia area for rejecting his marriage proposal 19 years ago.

Dhaka Third Additional District and Sessions Judge Md Humayun Kabir handed down the verdict, said bench assistant of the court Md Aminur Rahman.

According to the case documents, Rezaul proposed marriage to Mahmudha Akter, a fatherless schoolgirl from Ashulia, on 28 March 2007, which the girl rejected.

A few days later, on the morning of 2 April 2007, Rezaul allegedly entered Roxi’s room and repeatedly struck her on the head with a sharp spade.

Roxi was rescued in a critical condition and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, Roxi’s maternal cousin Nurul Islam Babu filed a murder case with Ashulia Police Station.

After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against Rezaul as the sole accused on 4 July 2007. The court framed charges against him on 4 March 2008 and ordered the trial to begin.

During the trial, the court recorded the statements of 12 witnesses.
