Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam condemned and protested the attack, vandalism, and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in the capital’s Mirpur on Thursday midnight.
Jamaat’s Central Executive Council member and Ameer
of its Dhaka City North unit as well as mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City
Corporation (DNCC) Mohammad Selim Uddin and party Secretary Dr Muhammad Rezaul
Karim expressed their concerns through a press release on Saturday.
According to media reports and local residents, a
reserved-seat woman MP and a BNP leader of the Dhaka City North unit allegedly
planned and instigated the attack on the centre.
The Radda MCH-FP Centre has been providing a range
of services–including maternal and child healthcare, immunisation, family
planning, and other essential health services–to low-income and underprivileged
people in Mirpur.
“An attack on such an important institution
providing essential healthcare services to disadvantaged communities is
extremely alarming and deeply regrettable, particularly under a democratic government,”
the leaders said.
“Land disputes and ownership claims can be addressed
through legal, administrative, and judicial channels. But taking the law into
one’s own hands, demolishing a healthcare facility at midnight, and allegedly
looting medical supplies and equipment belonging to government vaccination
programmes cannot be accepted under any circumstances,” they added.
The leaders demanded a neutral investigation about
the incident.
“The government must ensure that such incidents do
not recur, as any attempt to establish ownership or possession of property
through mob action constitutes a direct challenge to the rule of law and the
state’s judicial system.”
They urged to the government to promptly identify
those involved in the attack, vandalism, and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre
and take legal action against them.
They also called for immediate steps to recover the
looted medical equipment and government property and to resume the operations
of the affected healthcare centre as soon as possible.
