A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed 15 more accused, including leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, on a three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over a cocktail blast and alleged sabotage in Gulshan.
Dhaka Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order following a
police petition, said Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector
Moktar Hossain.
The accused are: Nirab Khan, 22; Md Saiful Islam, 52; Md
Jewel Sikder, 33; Md Sahed, 37; Shanto Sheikh, 28; Md Harun Maizbhandari, 55;
Khaled Mahmud Faysal, 40; Md Shafiqul Rahman, 50; Billal Gazi, 35; Ismail
Siraji, 32; Md Arifur Rahman Dipu, 27; Md Idrisul Alam, 55; Zainal Abedin
Mamun, 50; Jayanta Kumar Baroi, 43; and Md Mozammel Haque, 75.
They are involved in activities of the Awami League and its
affiliated organisations, according to police.
Earlier, Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Ruhul Amin,
also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the
court and sought a seven-day remand for each of them.
Defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand and bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the petitions. After hearing both sides, the court granted three days’ remand for each accused.
Earlier, on several occasions, courts sent several other
accused in this case to remand and jail.
According to the case statement, several hundred leaders and
activists of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned, and its
student wing, the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, attempted to bring out a
procession from in front of Bhola Mosque in Gulshan-1 around 11:45am on 11 September.
They allegedly chanted anti-government slogans and exploded
two crude bombs when police tried to disperse them. Police fired two rounds of
rubber bullets and seized five crude bombs from the spot.
