A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Md Monir, 25, on two-day remand in an Anti-Terrorism Act case after Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists detained him near Jagannath University on suspicion of links with the Awami League and handed him over to police on 20 September.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid passed the
order following a petition by police, said state prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid.
According to court documents, leaders and activists of the
Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)
initially detained Monir in front of Jagannath University on 20 September and
later handed him over to Kotwali police.
On 21 September, the investigation officer in the case, Sub-Inspector Ibn Khalid Hossain of Kotwali Police Station, produced Monir before the court and sought seven days’ remand.
Police alleged that the accused gathered in support of the
banned Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League and their affiliated
organisations and were involved in anti-government processions and attempts to
create instability.
The remand petition also alleged that they campaigned for
the banned organisations and conspired to undermine the country’s sovereignty.
Police sought Monir’s remand to identify other accused, as well as the alleged
financiers and instigators.
Earlier, police said Monir had been living in Dhaka for
around three to four years and working as a rickshaw puller. He is from Barguna
district.
