Police say the killing of 13-year-old Ishayat Shahriar Opratim, son of a Comilla University teacher, has largely been unravelled and may have been linked to his mother’s iPhone.
Police have claimed that the mystery surrounding the killing of Ishayat Shahriar Opratim, 13, the only son of Comilla University’s Bengali Department Associate Professor Nahida Begum, has largely been unravelled.
Preliminary findings suggest that he may have been killed over his mother’s iPhone.
District police will disclose details at a press conference at noon on Sunday.
Investigators said the university authorities and law enforcement agencies reviewed CCTV footage from various locations after Opratim went missing. In one of the recordings, a teenager was seen with Opratim near the main gate of Comilla University.
The teenager was later detained and questioned. Based on information provided by him, police raided his home on Saturday night and recovered Opratim’s mother’s iPhone.
Another teenager was detained in connection with the incident on Saturday. Both are being questioned.
A district police official, speaking on condition of anonymity on Saturday night, said the mystery surrounding the killing had largely been unravelled.
“Based on the information obtained during the investigation and analysis of the evidence, it is initially believed that Opratim may have been killed over the iPhone,” the official said.
District police media officer and Additional Superintendent of Police Md Lutfur Rahman said details of the incident would be presented at the noon press conference.
Opratim went missing on Friday afternoon after leaving his rented home in the Gandhamati area of Kotbari in Cumilla. He had taken his mother’s iPhone with him, telling his family that he was going to take photographs with friends.
He was a Class VII student at Border Guard Public School.
After he went missing, police began searching various locations and reviewing CCTV footage. His body was later recovered from an isolated forest in Lalmai Hill in Sananda village of Bijoypur union under Sadar Dakshin upazila in the afternoon.
There were signs of injury to his head.
Police said further information about those involved in the killing was emerging as the two detained teenagers were questioned and the recovered evidence was examined.
