Police have said they have found several important clues in the murder of 13-year-old Ishiat Shahriar Opratim, son of a Comilla University teacher, and are questioning several suspects in connection with the killing.

Some of the suspects are currently in police custody, said Comilla Police Superintendent Md Anisuzzaman.

“Several important clues have been found in the murder. We will soon determine whether the iPhone was the only motive or whether there was another reason behind the killing. Everyone involved will be brought to justice,” he said.

Officer-in-Charge of Comilla Sadar South Police Station Rakibul Islam said several people suspected of involvement in the murder were being questioned, and some were in police custody.

“Their names cannot be disclosed at this stage in the interest of the investigation,” he said.

The body of the boy was recovered and sent to the morgue of Comilla Medical College Hospital, the OC added.

Several sources said a youth named Tuhin might be involved in the murder. He was reportedly with Opratim from Friday afternoon and is currently in police custody.

Ishiat Shahriar Opratim was a Class VII student at Border Guard Public School. He was the only son of Dr Nahida Begum, an associate professor in the Department of Bangla at Comilla University, and KM Firoz Shahriar, a businessman residing in Ward 24 of the Kotbari-Gandhamati area.

Opratim went missing after leaving his home around 3:30pm on Friday with his mother’s iPhone to take pictures with friends.

His body was recovered from the Sananda area of the neighbouring Comilla University campus around 1pm on Saturday. Police said there were signs of serious injury to his head.

Abdul Kader Zilani, the first person to see the body, said he and others spotted it while cutting bamboo in the jungle.

“At first, we thought someone was sleeping there. Later, we went closer and noticed injuries to the head,” he said.

He then informed a man named Mamun, who went to the spot and identified the body as Opratim’s.

Comilla University Proctor Prof Abdul Hakim said they had contacted various law enforcement agencies, including police, Detective Branch and the Special Response Battalion, after Opratim went missing.

“Unfortunately, he could not be rescued alive. The iPhone he was carrying with him has also not been recovered,” he said.

Local MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury visited the scene after learning about the murder and instructed the authorities to take swift action against those responsible.
