A hanging body of a Jagannath University (JnU) student, Anik Chandra Pal, was recovered from a student mess in the Chankharpul area of the capital on Tuesday night.

The deceased, Anik, was a student of the 2023-24 academic session of the Department of Drawing and Painting under the Faculty of Fine Arts at JnU.

According to Anik’s fellow resident of the mess, Joy Bhuiyan, his body was recovered from his room at around 9:30pm on Tuesday and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

‘On Tuesday night, one of his batch mates, who could not reach him by phone, asked us to check his room. We knocked on the door for a long time but received no response,’ Joy said.

As the door was locked from inside, they became suspicious and later broke the glass of a window and saw Anik hanging from a ceiling fan with a gamcha around his neck, Joy said..

Subhas Pal, assistant professor of the Department of Drawing and Painting and an assistant proctor of the university, said, ‘The body would be handed over to the family after completing the necessary legal procedures in the presence of his relatives.’

Ashique Iqbal, officer-in-charge of Bangshal Police Station, said the police initially suspected that Anik had died by suicide due to frustration over his physical condition

‘A note was found. It mentioned his physical illness, particularly his deteriorating eyesight. It stated that he had poor vision and might lose his eyesight completely after some time,’ the OC said.

He said that the process of handing over the body to the family is underway, adding that the family had expressed no suspicion regarding the death and had applied to the concerned authorities seeking to have the body handed over without a post-mortem examination.
