A Dhaka court on Tuesday sent former lawmaker of Pabna-2 constituency Khandaker Md Azizul Haque Arzu to jail in a case filed over the murder of Raju Ahmed, 24, during the anti-discrimination student movement in the capital’s Mohammadpur area.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after a hearing, said State Prosecutor Harun-Or-Rashid.
Earlier, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Zahidul Islam Kabir, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court and sought his detention.
However, no bail petition was filed on behalf of the accused. Following the hearing, the court passed the order. He was arrested from the Lalmatia area of the capital on 14 September.
According to the case documents, victim Raju Ahmed, an employee of Janani Courier Service, was shot on 19 July 2024 at around 4:30pm during the anti-discrimination student movement.
Later, local people took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor declared him dead. The victim’s father later filed the case with Mohammadpur Police Station on 27 August 2024.
The detention petition said sufficient information and evidence had been found during the preliminary investigation regarding Arzu’s involvement in the incident. His detention in jail was necessary until completion of the investigation.
