Gazipur police arrested three people, including a man and his mother, over the murder of a woman whose remains were recovered from a suitcase and a plastic sack dumped in a roadside waterbody in Joydebpur.

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) in Gazipur said the woman was allegedly killed by her lover following disputes over their relationship, his previous marriage and other issues.

Gazipur PBI Superintendent of Police Md Rakibul Akter disclosed the information at a press briefing at his office on Monday.

The arrestees are Md Mission Islam, 22, son of Maskur Alam of Saidpur Eastpara village in Shibganj, Bogura; his mother Banu Akter, 43, and Md Mizanur Rahman Milton, 24, of Buraburi village in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha.

Mission and his mother lived in a rented house in the Bahadurpur Tulshibhita Sagar Market area of Gazipur city.

The deceased, Dolly Akter, 30, daughter of Badsha Mia of Pahar Pabijan village in Muktagachha, Mymensingh, had been working at a factory in Baniarchala, Gazipur and living in a rented house in the area after separating from her husband.

Police recovered a suitcase and a plastic sack containing the remains of a woman from a canal beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway under Joydebpur Police Station on Friday afternoon.

Dolly’s elder brother Sohel later filed a murder case with Joydebpur Police Station. Following the filing of the case, Gazipur PBI began a shadow investigation while working to establish the identity of the deceased.

Md Mostafizur Rahman Ansari, an inspector of Gazipur PBI, said investigators, using information technology, arrested Milton, Mission and Banu from separate rented houses in the Bahadurpur Tulshibhita area on Saturday.

During interrogation, the suspects allegedly told investigators that Dolly and Mission had developed a relationship while working at the same factory.

According to the PBI, Dolly went to Mission’s rented house on the night of 8 September. Mission, his mother and Dolly had dinner together before Mission and Dolly went to sleep in the same room while Banu stayed in another room.

Police said an argument later broke out between Mission and Dolly over marriage and issues related to their past, following which Mission decided to kill her.

The PBI said Mission allegedly gave Dolly sleeping and allergy medicines and later suffocated her with a lungi and a pillow after she fell asleep. He then allegedly hid the body under a wooden bed.

The following morning, Banu allegedly found the body while cleaning the room. Mission and his mother then allegedly brought a suitcase to dispose of the body.

As the body could not fit into the suitcase, they allegedly collected a blade and later used a machete to divide the remains into two parts, according to the PBI.

One part was allegedly placed inside the suitcase, while the other was wrapped in polythene and put inside the plastic sack.

The PBI said Mission later called his friend Milton, telling him that he needed help shifting house. Milton came to the rented home and helped load the suitcase and sack onto an autorickshaw.

Mission, Banu and Milton then allegedly travelled to Rajendrapur and later took a CNG-run auto-rickshaw to the Bhabanipur Bridge area beside the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, where they allegedly dumped the suitcase and sack into the water.

Police said Milton noticed blood on his hand and asked Mission what was inside the suitcase and sack. Mission allegedly then told him that they contained Dolly’s remains.

Based on information provided by the suspects, PBI members later raided Mission’s rented house and recovered a machete and a leftover scotch tape allegedly used to package the remains, Dolly’s National Identity Card, mobile phone and shoes.

SP Rakibul Akter said identifying the deceased had initially been difficult because the remains had decomposed.

“Crime-scene analysis, modern technology, intelligence information and reliable sources helped us identify the victim and bring those involved in the murder to justice,” he said.

He added that the accused had allegedly confessed to the killing and given statements before a court under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
