A clash broke out between two groups outside Islami Bank Tower in Motijheel in the capital on Monday morning, centring on a programme organised by the Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum.

Several people from both sides were injured in the incident, including Motassim Billah, vice-president of the forum and a businessman.

The Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum organised the protest demanding the appointment of honest, competent and professional people to the bank’s board of directors and opposing the alleged intervention of S Alam, who has faced allegations of involvement in the bank’s affairs.

Witnesses said the two groups initially engaged in a verbal altercation outside Islami Bank Tower in the morning. The argument later turned into pushing and scuffling.

At one stage, the two groups began chasing each other, leading to a clash in which several people were injured.

Professor Nur Nabi Manik, president of the Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum, alleged that former bank officials and employees who had been dismissed over alleged irregularities in recruitment, along with supporters of S Alam, had gathered at the site before the programme began.

He claimed that when the programme started, the group attacked customers and shareholders.

“At least 25 members of our forum were injured in the attack,” he said, adding that they were taken to different hospitals in Dhaka.

Manik also alleged that although police were present at the scene and dragged members of the forum away, they failed to take effective action to prevent the attack.

He showed journalists photographs and video footage of the incident.

Meanwhile, the Islami Bank Conscious Customers Forum has scheduled a press conference outside Islami Bank Tower at 11:30am to provide details of the clash.

The statements of the former officials and employees accused in the incident, or of representatives of the other group involved, could not be obtained immediately.
