The two-day National Urban Forum 2026 began in Dhaka on Sunday, bringing together policymakers, experts and development partners to call for stronger action to build more inclusive, liveable and climate-resilient cities across Bangladesh.
Jointly organised by the Local Government Division and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bangladesh, in association with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP), with support from the UK Government, the forum will conclude on 7 September.
More than one-third of Bangladesh’s population now lives in urban areas, with cities contributing nearly 65% of national GDP. Rapid urbanisation, climate change, inequality and climate-induced migration are increasing pressure on housing, transport, infrastructure, public services and the environment.
Discussions highlighted congestion, waterlogging, waste management, pollution and limited institutional capacity, particularly around Dhaka and the Dhaka–Chattogram corridor.
Speakers said the adoption of the National Urban Policy 2025 was a significant milestone, but stressed the need for stronger coordination, capable local institutions, adequate financing and locally led solutions to turn policy into action.
State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin said the forum should help promote urban development where no one is left behind and everyone can live with dignity, security and hope.
UNDP Bangladesh Resident Representative Stephen Rodriques said the forum marked the beginning of a shared responsibility to act, noting that Bangladesh’s future would largely be shaped in its cities and towns.
British High Commission Dhaka Acting High Commissioner and Development Director James Goldman, ADB Deputy Country Director Akira Matsunaga and Local Government Division Joint Secretary (Planning 2) Md Samsul Islam also called for stronger collaboration and practical action.
The forum aims to strengthen urban planning, governance and services, promote socio-economic development, enhance climate resilience and environmental sustainability, and advance locally led adaptation and Nature-Based Solutions.
