Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) has submitted a memorandum to Social Welfare and Women and Children's Affairs Minister AZM Zahid Hossain on Wednesday, urging the government to strengthen overall security on the Dhaka University campus, curb criminal activities in adjacent areas, and guarantee the safety of students.

The memorandum was presented during a meeting at which DUCSU representatives highlighted the pressing security concerns on the campus, particularly in areas adjacent to the Suhrawardy Udyan and the Central Shaheed Minar.

DUCSU executive members Sarbamitra Chakma and Anas Ibne Munir confirmed the information.

To address the long-standing issues involving vagrants and homeless individuals residing on the campus, DUCSU proposed establishing an 'Active Monitoring Team' through a joint initiative between the university administration and the ministry.

The proposed team would conduct regular patrols across the campus and its periphery to detect potential safety risks promptly. The student union also emphasised the necessity of implementing a humane rehabilitation system for the displaced population.

Addressing the situation after dark, the delegation raised serious concerns over student harassment, drug abuse, drug trafficking, and rising criminal activities near Suhrawardy Udyan and the Shaheed Minar.

They called for long-term solutions, including enhanced law enforcement presence and increased surveillance in crime-prone zones to maintain a student-friendly environment.

In addition to security matters, the delegation discussed career development initiatives for female students.

DUCSU proposed introducing specialised training programmes tailored to current job market demands, focusing on artificial intelligence, graphic design, computer literacy, and freelancing to enhance female students’ technical skills and employability.

Sarbamitra Chakma stressed that seamless coordination among government ministries, law enforcement agencies, and university administration remains essential to safeguarding student welfare.

The DUCSU delegation comprised Student Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah, Career Development Secretary Md Mazharul Islam, Executive members Sarbamitra Chakma and Anas Ibne Munir.
