A Dhaka court on Sunday sent two women, who were arrested for
intending to pay tribute to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August, to jail in a
six-month-old case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Before they were detained, the two accused women – Suma
Baral alias Dolly and Jannatul Ferdous alias Jannat – were on their way to
paying tributes at the portrait of Sheikh Mujib at Dhanmondi 32.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain
sent them to jail after rejecting their bail petitions, said Prosecution
Division Sub-Inspector Abul Bashar.
Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Abu Solaiman Suman, also
the investigating officer in the case, produced the duo before the court and
sought their detention in jail in the case.
Later, defence lawyer Liton Mia sought bail for Suma Baral,
while lawyer Gazi Faisal Islam sought bail for Jannat. However, the court
rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail.
According to the case documents, around 20 to 25 members of
the banned Mohila Awami League had allegedly gathered in the Dhanmondi area on
27 February to hold an anti-government procession. Police detained several
people from the spot, while others fled.
A case was subsequently filed with Dhanmondi Police Station
under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the incident. Police sought to show the two
women arrested as accused in the case.
