The BNP government has decided to prepare an “accurate and complete” list of Freedom Fighters, including the martyrs of the Liberation War and the women raped in the war.
On Wednesday, the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs outlined a number of potential steps for executing the task. These decisions were taken at a consultation meeting held at the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
Participants at the meeting
emphasized building a reliable national database through extensive verification
and cross-checking, combined with research-based data, rather than preparing
the list on the basis of scattered information. The ministry disclosed these details
in a press release.
The speakers said that, as a long
period has passed since the Liberation War, it is extremely important to
preserve the testimonies of eyewitnesses and people with firsthand experience
as soon as possible. For this purpose, they said, field-level information
should be collected by involving the administration, researchers, students, and
local people from the village to the district level.
They also called for properly
verifying and preserving information about not only armed freedom fighters who
fought on the battlefields, but also ordinary civilians, teachers,
intellectuals, and women who were killed by the Pakistani occupation forces and
their collaborators. They recommended preserving the documents and sources of
information behind every name included in the list so that these records can
serve as a reliable foundation for future generations of researchers.
