Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday that the government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to seek the cancellation of the bail granted to former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed by a court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Speaking to reporters after a views-exchange meeting with officers and members of Rajshahi Range Police and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police at the Rajshahi Police Lines this afternoon, the minister said he learned that Benazir had been granted conditional bail by a Dubai court.
"I came to know about it while I was on the stage. I immediately spoke to the home secretary, who then contacted our ambassador in Dubai," Salahuddin said.
He said the government appointed a law firm in Dubai a few days ago specifically to deal with the matter and instructed it to pursue the cancellation of Benazir's bail.
Benazir has been released from a jail in Dubai after being granted conditional bail following his arrest in the UAE.
A UAE court approved his bail petition on 27 July. He was released from custody on 30 July after completing the necessary legal formalities.
The home minister said, “I have been informed that he [Benazir] was granted bail on the condition that he would not leave the UAE. I have asked for a certified copy of the court order to know the exact conditions. We have instructed the law firm to pursue the cancellation of the bail."
Asked what steps Bangladesh would take next, Salahuddin said, “We are making every effort. We hope the bail will be cancelled and that we will be able to bring him back to Bangladesh as soon as possible."
