The head teachers and assistant teachers of 367 government primary schools across nine upazilas in Pabna have been served with show-cause notices for failing to ensure students achieved the expected learning outcomes in Bangla, English and Mathematics.
The notices were issued by the respective Upazila Education Officers between 20 and 26 July. The teachers have been given three to five working days to submit their written explanations.
Pabna District Primary Education Officer Md Ashraful Kabir confirmed the matter on Thursday (30 July).
According to the District Primary Education Office, the affected schools include 74 in Santhia, 59 in Atgharia, 54 in Pabna Sadar, 50 in Bera, 48 in Chatmohar, 41 in Sujanagar, 23 in Ishwardi, 11 in Bhangura and seven in Faridpur upazila.
The notices state that under the 180-day action plan, schools were expected to ensure that by 30 June, third-grade students could read Bangla fluently, fourth-grade students had mastered the four basic arithmetic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication and division—and fifth-grade students could read English fluently.
However, the targeted learning outcomes were not achieved in the schools concerned.
The notices further state that despite repeated directives and monitoring, the schools failed to take effective measures to meet the targets. Teachers have therefore been asked to explain within three working days why departmental action should not be taken against them for negligence of duty.
The notices warn that disciplinary action will be initiated if the explanations are found to be unsatisfactory.
