BNP Secretary General and Local Government,
Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has
said the government is committed to implementing the 31-point programme
announced during the simultaneous movement in letter and spirit.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has also made a
firm commitment to fully implement the July Charter signed with the consent of all
political parties, he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks at a briefing on
Monday after a dinner hosted by political parties and alliances that were
allies in the simultaneous movement at the state guesthouse Jamuna.
He said the meeting with the top leaders of
the allied parties, held five months after the formation of the government, was
highly significant.
“The prime minister exchanged views with the
political leaders who had remained together during the prolonged movement in a
cordial atmosphere,” he said.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman hosted the
dinner and exchanged greetings with the leaders of the political parties and
alliances that were allies in the simultaneous movement for the first time
since forming the government five months ago, with a view to further
strengthening national unity.
Fakhrul described the gathering of political
leaders who had been fellow travellers in the 15-16-year-long movement as a new
chapter in the country’s democratic journey and state reform.
At the beginning of the briefing, Fakhrul
paid deep respect to those killed in the July 2024 student-people uprising.
He said the sacrifices of the martyrs had
created an opportunity to restore a democratic environment in the country by
ending fascism and authoritarianism.
“The nation will also remember forever the
contributions of those who were injured and became disabled during the
movement,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s activities over
the past few months, the BNP secretary general said the government is working
by prioritising people’s welfare.
Fakhrul further said the prime minister would
continue to hold meetings and exchange views with the top leaders of allied
political parties and alliances regularly in the future to maintain national
unity, advance state reform and strengthen coordination on various political
issues.
