India on
Tuesday said it continues to maintain the previous position regarding the
extradition of ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, adding that the matter
would be treated as a “legal one” as always.
“The issue
is a legal one, and would be dealt with accordingly,” said Randhir Jaiswal, the
spokesperson for India's Ministry of External Affairs, at a briefing in New
Delhi.
Randhir
made the remark after a journalist asked about Delhi’s position regarding a
recent debate in Bangladesh over Hasina’s extradition and surrender.
The debate
has resurfaced following Hasina’s recent interview to Reuters, where the Awami
League chief claimed she, and her party colleagues, plant to return to Bangladesh
and surrender before the country’s law in December.
Bangladesh
has repeatedly asked Indian authorities to hand over Hasina, as she has been
convicted over crimes against humanity in the country.
