ICT Chief Prosecutor
Md Aminul Islam on Tuesday said initial proofs have been found confirming
that Awami League (AL) was involved as a group in the July Uprising massacre,
potentially paving the way for imposing a lengthy ban on the party with judicial
approval.
After
finding the initial proofs, the investigation team of International Crimes
Tribunal (ICT) has launched a thorough investigation, which would complete in a
“matter of time,” the chief prosecutor told reporters.
When asked
about the initial proofs, the chief prosecutor said Awami League was involved
as a party in the July Uprising atrocities perpetrated by the government led by
it.
The present BNP government currently maintains a ban on the political activities of Awami
League, and awaits a judicial endorsement to this end.
During the interim
government’s tenure, the National Democratic Movement (NDM) filed a formal
complaint against Awami League as a party for its role in the alleged crimes against
humanity during the July-August 2024 uprising.
The
complaint was filed with the ICT.
Earlier on
Sunday, the ICT chief prosecutor told reporters that a probe was ongoing
against Awami League as a party. Follow-up measures would be taken if initial proofs were
found to this end, he added.
