A three-day programme marking the nationally declared "Nazrul Year 2026–2027" was inaugurated in Haluaghat of Mymensingh on Thursday, with local officials and political leaders highlighting the enduring relevance of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam's ideals.
The programme, organised by the Haluaghat upazila administration,
was inaugurated at the Upazila Parishad Auditorium.
BNP Joint Secretary General and Administrator of the
Mymensingh District Council Syed Emran Saleh Prince attended the event as the
chief guest.
The programme was chaired by Haluaghat Upazila
Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Faisal Alam. Among those present were Assistant
Commissioner (Land) Zakia Sultana Rozy, Haluaghat Upazila BNP Convener Aslam
Mia Babul, Haluaghat Municipality BNP Convener Hanif Mohammad Shaker Ullah,
government officials, political leaders, cultural activists, teachers,
journalists and representatives of various professions.
Addressing the gathering, Prince said Prime Minister
Tarique Rahman had declared 2026–2027 as "Nazrul Year" during the
national celebration of Kazi Nazrul Islam's birth anniversary held in Trishal,
Mymensingh, on 23 May.
He said the Haluaghat programme was part of a series
of nationwide events being organized to observe the declaration.
Prince described Kazi Nazrul Islam as not only the
"Rebel Poet" but also an enduring symbol of equality, humanity,
secularism and communal harmony. He said such initiatives would help introduce
Nazrul's literature, music and philosophy to the younger generation.
He urged students to embrace their language,
literature, history and culture alongside modern knowledge and technology,
saying that cultural development is as important as economic progress in
building a strong nation.
"A nation that preserves its culture never
loses its way," he said, adding that the government has undertaken various
initiatives to connect the younger generation with Nazrul's legacy and that the
observance of Nazrul Year reflects those efforts.
He also said the year-long celebration would help
present the poet's message of love, humanity, rebellion and harmony to a global
audience.
The inauguration marked the beginning of a three-day
programme featuring Nazrul songs, poetry recitations, discussion sessions,
cultural performances and competitions involving students.
