A youth was arrested at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on
Tuesday on allegations he secretly recorded videos inside the women’s washroom
at the university’s Teachers-Students Centre (TSC).
The accused, identified as Riaz Ahmed, 23, a resident of
Keraniganj, was detained from the TSC around 2:00am on Tuesday.
He is reportedly employed as a branch manager at RFL
Electronics Group.
The university authorities later filed a case against him
with Ashulia Police Station.
Mohammed Abu Sayed, deputy registrar of the university’s
Security Division and the complainant in the case, told reporters that
according to the complaint, female students heard the voice of a man outside the
women’s washroom around 1:30am.
When they questioned what he was doing there, they became
suspicious and checked his mobile phone, where they allegedly found several
sensitive videos of female students, he said.
The university’s security personnel subsequently detained
the accused and handed him over to police at around 2:30am, Abu Sayed added.
“The university administration filed a case against him at around
6:00am under the Pornography Control Act and several other relevant sections,”
he said.
Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Tariqul
Islam said that the preliminary investigation found merit in the allegations,
though the findings would be confirmed after a forensic examination of the
suspect’s mobile phone.
“The accused has been shown arrested in the case and was
produced before the court on Tuesday morning,” he added.
