A Dhaka court on Monday sentenced Abhijit Adhikari Tirtha, a close associate of former NRB Global Bank and Reliance Finance Limited Managing Director Prashanta Kumar Halder (PK Halder), to seven years in prison in a graft case.
Judge Md Hasanuzzaman of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-1 delivered the verdict in the absence of the accused, who has remained absconding since the outset of the case. The sentence was handed down under two separate charges.
The court's bench assistant, Rajib De, confirmed the verdict, saying the court had also issued a conviction warrant and an arrest warrant against the fugitive convict.
According to court sources, Abhijit, the former managing director of Sukhada Properties Limited, was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for concealing information about his assets. He was also sentenced to five years' imprisonment for acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.
In addition, the court fined him Tk1.35 crore (Tk1,35,05,284). In default of payment, he will have to serve an additional 30 days in jail.
The court also ordered the confiscation of assets acquired beyond his known sources of income in favour of the state.
The judgment stated that the sentences would run concurrently, meaning he will serve the highest sentence of five years in prison if arrested and convicted under the ruling.
The case was filed on 6 March 2023, by the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) Assistant Director Manasi Biswas. The complaint alleged that Abhijit possessed assets worth Tk1.25 crore that were inconsistent with his known sources of income and had failed to submit a mandatory wealth statement within the stipulated timeframe.
Following an investigation, ACC Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain submitted the charge sheet against him on 5 May 2024. The charge sheet alleged that he had accumulated illegal assets worth Tk1.35 crore.
The trial formally began on 13 March 2025, after the court framed charges against the accused. During the proceedings, the court recorded testimonies from five witnesses before delivering its verdict.
