A Dhaka court has placed a government engineer and his wife on two-day remand each for allegedly killing their nine-year-old domestic worker in the capital’s Dhanmondi area on Friday.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail granted the remand following a plea submitted by the investigating officer.
Earlier, around 3:30am Saturday, a team from Dhanmondi Police Station detained Sabibur Rahman, 46, and his wife Farah Nusrat, 40, from their residence, said a press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Sabibur Rahman is the additional chief engineer (civil) at the Water Development Board.
The couple was later shown arrested in a case filed by the victim’s father on Saturday.
The DMP press release cited Dhanmondi Police Station and the case statement to detail the backgrounds of the killing.
The press release states that the family of the victim, Rikta Moni, 9, sent her to work as a domestic help at a house in Dhamnondi 31 months ago to cater for acute poverty.
Afterwards, Rikta Moni suffered physical and psychological abuses at the hands of the house master and housewife, Sabibur and Farah Nusrat.
Around 6am on Friday, Rikta fell down from the balcony of the 11th-floor apartment. Doctors declared her dead following her admission at the Bangladesh Medical College Hospital.
Her body bore multiple injury marks and the left arm was broken, the press release stated.
