A Dhaka court on Wednesday framed charges against Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, son of former Public Service Commission (PSC) driver Syed Abed Ali Jibon, in a case filed over allegations of acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.
Judge Begum Shamima Afroze of the Dhaka Divisional Special Judge’s Court passed the order after a hearing and fixed 9 July for the recording of prosecution witnesses.
Confirming the development, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Court Inspector Md Saiful Islam said the court had framed charges against Sohanur and ordered the trial to commence. The accused was present in court during the hearing.
On 5 January last year, the ACC filed three separate cases against Abed Ali, his wife Shaharin Akter Shilpi, and their son Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam.
According to the case documents, Sohanur was accused of acquiring assets worth Tk3.30 crore beyond his known sources of income. The ACC recently submitted a charge sheet against him in a case filed under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.
Notably, on 20 January, the ACC arrested Sohanur Rahman, son of Syed Abed Ali, the former driver of a PSC chairman who came under scrutiny in connection with a question paper leak scandal. He has remained in jail since then.
