Garment workers have blocked a major road in the Tejgaon Industrial Area of the capital, demanding payment of their outstanding wages.
The protest began at around 10:15am on Tuesday (16 June), when workers took to the streets and started demonstrating, bringing traffic to a halt on the affected road.
According to sources at Tejgaon Industrial Area Police, the workers came onto the main road adjacent to Love Road to press their demand for unpaid salaries. They staged a sit-in on the roadway, disrupting vehicular movement and causing traffic congestion to spread to nearby roads. Vehicles have remained stranded on both sides of the main road due to the blockade.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbubur Rahman of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station said that workers of Nasa Garments had blocked the road over unpaid wages, resulting in a complete suspension of traffic movement. He noted that the workers had staged similar road blockades on several occasions in the past.
Approximately 100 to 150 workers are currently participating in the protest. Senior police officials are working to bring the situation under control, while discussions with the workers are ongoing.
