The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) shot a Bangladeshi man to death in the Dattagram border area of Kulaura upazila in Moulvibazar on Friday.

The victim was Mujibur Rahman, 30, son of late Ojibur Rahman of Dattagram village under Sharifpur union.

According to media reports, Mujibur’s body was taken to Unakoti Hospital in India, where an autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Saturday before it is handed over to the Bangladeshi authorities.

Locals and police said a group of six to seven people, including Mujibur, went to the Lokhairchar area along the Dattagram border in the evening to bring Indian goods into Bangladesh illegally.

At that time, members of the BSF’s Latiapura camp allegedly opened fire on them. Mujibur sustained bullet wounds and died on the spot, while the others managed to flee.

Sharifpur union parishad member Joynul Islam confirmed the incident.

Quoting Mujibur’s brother Ajijur, he said BSF personnel took the body away and sent it to an Indian hospital.

Kulaura police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Jahirul Islam said police personnel were sent to the spot.

Border Guard Bangladesh’s Dattagram camp commander Amjad Hossain said they were at the scene and details of the incident would be provided later.
