Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has a sustainable, practical and groundbreaking roadmap for the National University aimed at reshaping higher education and strengthening human resource development across Bangladesh, according to Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin.

Speaking at the inauguration of a teacher training programme on skill-based education at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka on Sunday (7 June), Amin, also the spokesperson at Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), said the National University would evolve beyond a degree-awarding institution into a centre for knowledge, research, skills development and civic education.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the event.

Amin said the reforms launched at the university over the past three and a half months were guided by the Prime Minister’s long-term vision and the BNP’s election manifesto. Key initiatives include expanding vocational and technical education, establishing career and job placement centres, strengthening industry-academia collaboration, increasing apprenticeship and internship opportunities, setting up language centres, promoting third-language learning, introducing a “Learning with Happiness” programme, implementing a “One Student, One Tree” campaign and supporting environmental projects, including canal excavation.

He said the government’s objective was to create a skilled, responsible and self-reliant generation capable of meeting the demands of a modern economy.

Highlighting the importance of the institution, Amin noted that more than three million students study under the National University through its 2,285 affiliated colleges, making it one of the world’s largest higher education networks. He said reforming the university would have far-reaching implications for education, employment, human resource development and the livelihoods of millions of families.

The adviser also announced measures to address session backlogs and improve academic standards through digitisation of examination and results systems, alongside broader efforts to modernise the university.

He said the government aimed to develop an education system that combines patriotism, social responsibility and employability, while equipping students with the skills needed to navigate the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The programme was also attended by Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon, Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Abdul Khalek and National University Vice-Chancellor Professor ASM Amanullah, among others.
