Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee made a startling claim on Tuesday, suggesting that she is aware of who was behind a high-profile murder in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a protest rally in Kolkata’s Dharmatala
area on Tuesday, Banerjee praised the Special Task Force (STF) of the West
Bengal Police for arresting a major suspect linked to a murder case in
Bangladesh.
“Please remember that the STF arrested a major
killer from Bangladesh. There was a huge uproar over the incident in
Bangladesh,” Banerjee said, adding, “I am not speaking about another country,
as I do not have that right, but my main point is that they entered West Bengal
through Meghalaya. Our STF then arrested them.”
Her remarks appeared to refer to the arrests made by
the West Bengal STF in March this year in connection with the killing of Osman
Hadi in Bangladesh. The two main suspects arrested were identified as Faisal
Karim Masud, also known as Rahul, and Alamgir Hossain.
According to West Bengal Police, the suspects had
crossed into West Bengal through Meghalaya. Later, the STF arrested another
accused, Philip Sangma, near Shantipur in Nadia district.
Earlier, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan
Police had identified Faisal as the principal suspect in the Osman Hadi murder
case.
However, Banerjee did not explicitly confirm whether
she was referring to this particular case.
The former chief minister further claimed that after
the arrests, India’s home minister personally contacted her and requested that
details of the operation not be disclosed publicly.
“Then the home minister himself called me and said,
‘Please tell the Bengal Police not to let this information become public. It is
in the national interest,’” she said.
Raising further questions, Banerjee remarked, “Who
had the murder carried out? Whose names had emerged? Even if the government
changes today, I still know everything. My heart is a repository of words,
information, and truth.”
Her comments have sparked fresh speculation about
the identities of those allegedly connected to the Bangladesh murder case,
though she stopped short of naming any individuals or providing specific
details.
