A man and his daughter witnessed a heart-wrenching tragedy on Wednesday night when a speeding train hit and killed his wife and 18-month-old son as they were crossing rail tracks at Narsingdi Railway Station.
The victims are Sathi Begum, 27, and Safwan -- wife and child of Sujon Mia, who hails from Shibpur upazila of the district.
At the time of the accident, there was a stationary train at the platform which potentially blocked the view of an incoming train on the next tracks.
Feeling it safe, the woman started crossing the tracks before she could see the speeding train, said Narsingdi Railway Police Station Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar.
The victims suffered critical injuries and were rushed to the Narsingdi District Hospital, where the doctors pronounced them dead.
The hospital's air turned heavy with the wails of Sujon Mia and other relatives of the victims. Sujon Mia said he shouted repeatedly to warn his loved ones after seeing the incoming train, and even tried to stop the train -- but in vain.
Now he has nothing to celebrate about during the Eid festival, Sujon lamented when talking to reporters.
According to family sources, the four-member family went on an Eid shopping spree at Narsingdi town earlier in the day. In the evening, they started the journey back home towards the village.
While crossing the Narsingdi rail tracks, they met the unfortunate tragedy and loss.
It is worth noting that Sujon Mia struggles to make ends meet. He does odd jobs during the day: driving a battery-run auto rickshaw, and serving as the assistant of a mason.
