A cattle trader went missing and 23 sacrificial cows were swept away after a trawler capsized in the Padma River in Munshiganj’s Louhajang upazila on Monday afternoon.
The incident took place near pillar No. 15 of the Padma Bridge at around 2:30pm amid inclement weather.
The missing trader was identified as Ayub Ali, 45, son of late Abdur Rahman Mistri from Salipur village in Charbhadrasan upazila of Faridpur district.
According to police, 20 traders were transporting 28 sacrificial cows from Charbhadrasan to a cattle market in Dhaka’s Keraniganj when the trawler was caught in a sudden storm and capsized beneath the Padma Bridge.
Nineteen of the traders managed to swim ashore safely, while Ayub Ali remained missing.
Of the 28 cows on board, five were rescued alive, while the remaining 23 were carried away by the strong river current.
Mawa Naval Police outpost in-charge Md Elias said rescue efforts were being hampered by rough weather and strong currents.
He added that the sunken trawler had not yet been located and operations would resume once conditions improved.
Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence officials said immediate rescue efforts could not be launched due to heavy waves and strong winds.
