Residents in Mirpur erupted in protests early Friday over the rape and murder of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter.

They staged demonstrations, blocking the Mirpur-10 intersection and demanding the maximum punishment and a swift trial for the killers.

The protesters chanted various slogans, including “Justice for Ramisa” and “We want the death penalty”.

Due to the demonstrations, all vehicular movement in the area came to a complete halt.

The protesters said that such brutal incidents continue to occur due to delays in the country’s justice system.

They called for a prompt completion of the investigation and exemplary punishment for the accused.

Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited Ramisa’s family at Pallabi on Thursday night. During the visit, he assured them that the case would be investigated swiftly and thoroughly.

Ramisa, a second-grader at Popular Model High School in Mirpur, was killed in a neighbouring flat of the same building on 19 May.

The main accused, Sohel Rana, 34, gave a confessional statement before a court on 20 May, admitting that he sexually assaulted and later killed the child.
