A man identified as the younger brother of an alleged Rohingya criminal figure was shot dead in an apparent turf-related attack near a refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar.
The victim, Mohammad Kamal, 35, was killed around 2:30pm on Wednesday near the Friendship Hospital area adjacent to Camp-8 in Balukhali, according to officials.
Kamal, son of Musa Ahmed, was a resident of the camp and the younger brother of Nabi Hossain, who is described by law enforcement as a leading Rohingya criminal.
Confirming the incident, Riaz Uddin Ahmed, commander of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), said unidentified assailants opened fire on Kamal before fleeing the scene. He sustained bullet injuries to the chest and head.
“It is not yet clear who carried out the attack, but it may have been linked to a dispute over dominance following an incident the previous day,” he said.
Kamal was rushed to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared him dead, the APBn official added.
Following the incident, additional law enforcement personnel were deployed in the area, and a drive is underway to identify and apprehend those involved.
The victim’s wife said he was shot by assailants while returning home by easy-bike after Zuhr prayers.
A cousin of the deceased, Mohammad Ayub, alleged that members of an armed group were behind the attack.
Meanwhile, Nayek Saiful Islam, in charge of the police outpost at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, said the body has been sent to the morgue for post-mortem examination.
