A delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by State Minister Shama Obaed Islam, visited Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday and toured the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar National (FDMN) camps in Ukhiya upazila to assess humanitarian services on the ground.
During the visit, the delegation inspected food distribution activities run by the World Food Programme (WFP), educational facilities for Rohingya children, a hospital operated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and a production unit in Kutupalong where Rohingya women are engaged in work supported by Uniqlo.
The state minister also held an interactive session with elected representatives of the Rohingya community, including youth and women members. She listened to their concerns and assured them of Bangladesh’s continued support to improve living conditions in the camps, while working to create a conducive environment for their safe, dignified and voluntary return to Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
In the afternoon, she attended a stakeholder consultation at the office of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox’s Bazar. The meeting was attended by government officials, representatives of law enforcement agencies, as well as members of the United Nations, NGOs and international NGOs.
Addressing the consultation, Shama Obaed Islam thanked all stakeholders for their continued efforts in supporting the displaced Rohingya population and emphasised the need for coordinated action in line with government policy to ensure their safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation.
Following the meeting, the state minister briefed local journalists on her day-long visit and outlined the government’s policy priorities in addressing the protracted Rohingya crisis. She also highlighted renewed efforts by the current administration to raise the issue in regional and multilateral forums.
Officials noted that this was the first high-level visit from the foreign ministry to the Rohingya camps since the BNP-led government assumed office.
