A Dhaka court on Sunday sent former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) official Manzil Haider Chowdhury on a fresh four-day remand in the murder case of garment worker Rubel during the July uprising in the capital’s Adabor area.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piash
passed the order after police produced him before the court and sought a
seven-day remand.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam
ordered that he be sent to jail after police produced him before the court and
sought his detention following the completion of his previous remand.
Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamsed Alam
ordered that he be shown arrested in the Rubel murder case after the
investigating officer sought the order.
Manzil was arrested on 9 April from the DOHS area in
Mohakhali. He has been placed on remand several times in different cases since
then.
According to the case details, on 5 August, Rubel
and several hundred protesters brought out a demonstration at around 11am in
the Ring Road area of Adabor.
At that time, police and activists of the Awami
League and its affiliated bodies allegedly opened fire, during which Rubel
sustained bullet injuries and later died. Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed
the case with Adabor Police Station on 22 August last year over the incident.
