A group of students at Dhaka University apprehended an activist from the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League on Tuesday evening and handed him over to the police.
Activists of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti detained Mohammad
Shakib at the TSC area before escorting him to Shahbagh Police Station.
Shakib, a student of the Philosophy Department from
the 2021-22 session residing at Bijoy Ekattor Hall, allegedly participated in
attacks on protesters during the July uprising.
Jatiya Chhatra Shakti leaders stated that Shakib is
an active worker of the Chhatra League and faces two criminal cases related to
those incidents.
Reports indicate that the university had previously
expelled Shakib on a temporary basis for his involvement in an attack on fellow
students on 15 July 2024.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge
Moniruzzaman confirmed the detention, stating that officers are currently
investigating the matter.
He noted that if the existing cases against Shakib
are verified, he will be formally arrested under those charges; otherwise, the
police will take further action according to the law.
Dhaka University Proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmed
confirmed Shakib's identity as a student of the institution.
He noted that the student was handed over to the
police following reports of his involvement in two cases connected to the July
uprising.
