The government has announced a revised public transport fare structure following the recent increase in fuel prices, raising bus fares across the country.
The decision was made after a meeting with transport owners and workers on Thursday (23 April), said Road Transport Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam.
He said bus fares per kilometre have been increased by 11 paisa for both Dhaka and Chattogram. The same rate hike will also apply to inter-district bus services.
In the two major cities, the fare for buses and minibuses has increased from Tk2.42 per kilometre to Tk2.53. For long-distance routes, fares have gone up from Tk2.12 per kilometre to Tk2.23.
Earlier at noon, a meeting was held at the ministry’s conference room at the Secretariat to discuss the fare adjustment. The meeting was chaired by the minister and attended by transport owners, officials from the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), and other stakeholders.
Officials said transport owners had initially proposed an increase of 22 paisa per kilometre, but the final decision was set at a lower rate after discussions.
