Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman passes away

Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman has died after contracting malaria at the age of 58.

Mahbubur breathed his last at 6:25am at Square Hospital in Dhaka, according to the ministry. He was admitted to the hospital on Monday after his blood platelet count plummeted.

Doctors said that Mahbubur had been suffering from malaria and other complications for a long time.

Mahbubur Rahman joined the Bangladesh Civil Service (Customs and Excise) cadre in April 1994 as an assistant commissioner under the National Board of Revenue, Internal Resources Division of the finance ministry.

He served in various customs houses, customs, excise and VAT commissionerates and at the National Board of Revenue in roles including deputy commissioner, joint commissioner and additional commissioner until December 2010.
