The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a suspected member of a fraud syndicate linked to credit and debit card scams in Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur.

The suspect, Md Rakibul Islam, 23, son of Md Ansar Ali and Parvin Akhter, is a resident of Tajnagar Baisapara village in Parbatipur upazila, according to the CID Cyber Police Center (CPC) unit.

A CID press release said the case began when a senior official of the Khulna Power Development Board received a WhatsApp call on 6 January 2026 from an individual posing as an officer of Dutch-Bangla Bank’s “Nexus Pay” card upgrade team.

The caller persuaded the victim to disclose sensitive debit and credit card information under the pretext of urgent verification.

Using the information, the fraudsters conducted 12 unauthorised transactions between 7 and 9 January, embezzling a total of Tk13.75 lakh.

After discovering the fraud, the victim reported the matter to the bank and later filed a case with Sonadanga Police Station under Sections 420 and 406 of the Penal Code.

Following the filing of the case, a specialised CPC team launched a technical investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of the suspect.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused admitted involvement in an organised fraud ring and confessed to engaging in similar cyber fraud activities since 2023.

He said he had been recruited through Telegram via online job offers.

Investigators said he used applications such as “Line Bet” and “Raddy” to gain partial control of bank accounts and facilitate illegal transactions, including using relatives’ accounts for money laundering.

CID officials said the investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the syndicate. The suspect has been produced before the court.
