Emphasising the importance of judicial independence in a democratic system, newly appointed Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal has said that ensuring people’s right to justice is the fundamental objective of the judiciary.

He noted that democracy would be strengthened only if the executive, judiciary and legislature can function independently, adding that no interference from the executive branch has been observed so far.

He made the remarks on Saturday while speaking to journalists after offering Fateha, prayers and floral tributes at the graves of BNP founder and martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital. Officials from the Attorney General’s Office were present on the occasion.

The Attorney General said the participation of hundreds of thousands of people in Khaleda Zia’s funeral prayers on 31 December was evidence of her widespread popularity. He described her as an uncompromising leader in defending democracy and human rights in Bangladesh, adding that at this stage of democratic transition, her absence is deeply felt. Prayers were also offered so that Tarique Rahman may be able to lead the state effectively in the future.

Prayers were also offered for the late Arafat Rahman Koko.

Regarding his responsibilities as the state’s chief legal officer, he said: “I seek everyone’s cooperation in discharging my duties with honesty and dedication.” He alleged that democracy in the country had been undermined during the past three elections, but expressed hope that the democratic process has been restored through the 2026 election.

He also expressed optimism that good governance would be established and that the fundamental right to justice would be ensured for all citizens.
