Parts of an endangered Largetooth Sawfish, including its distinctive saw and around 150 kilogrammes of meat, were recovered during a special drive in Mathbaria upazila of Pirojpur following direct intervention by Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo.
The drive was conducted on Wednesday at the South
Bandar Bazar area of Mathbaria by the Social Forestry Division of Bagerhat in
coordination with the local administration and law enforcement agencies, said a
press release.
However, no one was arrested during the operation.
During the drive, fish traders and depot owners
present at the site were warned about the legal consequences of hunting,
killing, trading, or purchasing protected wildlife species. Officials also
sought their cooperation in conserving endangered species.
Authorities collected the recovered saw and small
samples of meat and bones weighing about 2–3 kilogrammes, while the remaining
meat was buried in the compound of the Bangladesh Water Development Board
office adjacent to Mathbaria Police Station.
The collected samples were sent to Dhaka on Wednesday evening through representatives of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division in Khulna for further examination.
