A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed former chief of the
Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), retired Lt Gen Sheikh Mamun
Khaled, on a six-day remand in a case filed over a killing linked to the
anti-discrimination student movement in 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana granted the
remand after the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin of the
Detective Branch (DB) of police, sought a seven-day remand.
This marked the second time he will be put on remand in the
same case since he was arrested in the early hours of Thursday.
Following his late-night arrest on 26 March, a court granted
five-day remand against the former army officer.
According to the case statement, Delwar Hossain, 40, took
part in the student-led job quota reform movement in the Mirpur-10 area on the
afternoon of 19 July 2024.
At one point, around 500-700 activists of the then ruling
Awami League attacked the peaceful demonstration using local weapons and
firearms.
On instructions from Mamun Khaled, the state-backed forces
opened fire on the demonstrators, critically injuring Delwar Hossain, among
others.
Two days later, Delwar succumbed to his injuries while
undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital’s Shyamoli area.
Later, a murder case was filed in July last year.
