A Dhaka court on Thursday placed former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), retired Lt Gen Sheikh Mamun Khaled, on a five-day remand in a case filed over a killing linked to the anti-discrimination student movement in 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Siddique Azad
passed the order following a petition filed by the investigation officer of the
case, Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin of the Detective Branch (DB) of police, seeking
a seven-day remand.
Earlier in the day, at around 3:10pm, the
accused was produced before the court amid tight security after his arrest late
on Wednesday night (26 March) from his residence in DOHS, Mirpur, in the
capital.
During the hearing, State Prosecutor Omar
Faruq Faruqui argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyers Morshed Hossain
Shahin and Nazrul Islam opposed the plea. The court later granted a five-day
remand.
According to the remand application, the
victim, Delwar Hossain, 40, took part in the anti-discrimination student
movement in the Mirpur-10 area on the afternoon of 19 July 2024. It is alleged
that several hundred activists of an Awami League affiliate carried out an
attack using local weapons and firearms.
The case statement further alleges that,
following instructions from Sheikh Mamun Khaled, indiscriminate firing was
carried out from multiple directions, leaving Delwar Hossain critically
injured. He was first taken to the National Institute of Cardiovascular
Diseases and later shifted to a private hospital in Shyamoli, where he
succumbed to his injuries on the morning of 21 July.
