A video content creator was shot and hacked to death near the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Sunday night, triggering panic among people present at the historic site.

The incident took place around 9:30pm.

The deceased was identified as Md Rakib, 27. He was rescued in a critically injured condition and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors declared him dead.

Mohammad Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at DMCH, said,” Rakib was brought to the hospital around 10pm with bullet and sharp weapon injuries. Doctors later pronounced him dead.”

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, a young man suddenly appeared in the Central Shaheed Minar area and fired several rounds of gunshots in public. Rakib sustained serious injuries in the shooting. The attacker and his associates later hacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically wounded.

People present at the scene chased and caught one suspect and handed him over to the Dhaka University proctorial team. The team later transferred him to Shahbagh Police Station.

The detained suspect was identified as Sihab Hossain, a resident of Khulna.

Confirming the development, Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said the proctorial team rushed to the spot immediately after receiving information about the shooting.

“One person was detained at the scene and handed over to the police. Shahbagh Police Station is currently investigating the matter,” he said.

The proctor also said no student of Dhaka University was involved in the incident. “Both the shooter and the deceased are outsiders,” he added.
