A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced a man named Akbar Hossain Shiblu to six months in jail in a case filed over killing a cat.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Al Biruni Mir delivered the verdict and issued a conviction warrant along with an arrest warrant against the accused.

The court also fined the accused Tk10,000, in default of which he will have to serve an additional one month of simple imprisonment.

On 5 February last year, Nafisa Nowrin Chowdhury filed a complaint on behalf of People for Animal Welfare, accusing Shiblu of killing the cat.

The court recorded the complainant’s statement and ordered Mohammadpur Police Station to investigate the allegation and submit a report.

Later, Mohammadpur police submitted a report confirming the allegation against the accused.

On 14 July last year, the court framed charges against Shiblu and the trial began.

According to the case statement, the cat belonging to Mansur, a resident of Muktijoddha Tower in Mohammadpur, went missing around noon on 1 February last year.

Later, CCTV footage from the building revealed the accused, Akbar Hossain Shiblu, kicking the cat repeatedly like a football.

Even after the cat fell and lay motionless, the accused continued to stamp on it with his feet to ensure its death. Mansur and Shiblu are residents of the same building.
