A Dhaka court on Friday ordered former leader of Students Against Discrimination and Presidency University student Abdur Razzak Bin Solaiman Riad to be sent to jail in a case of attempted murder.

Along with him, Md Riyadul Hawlader, Md Alif Ahmed Ashik, and Sayem Shikdar, also students of the same university, were sent to jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroze Tithi’s court ordered them to be sent to jail after police produced them before court seeking their detention.

The accused sought bail, which the court rejected, setting 1 March for further hearing.

Earlier on 26 February, police arrested them in the case filed by Presidency University student Nirjon Sardar Bandhan, who filed the attempted murder case against Riad and 10 others.

According to the case, there was prior enmity between the accused and the victim, Nirjon, and his friends.

On 26 February, the accused individuals asked the victim to visit their permanent campus and participate in the convocation when they meet in Room 412 on the 4th floor of Presidency University.

The accused—Riyadul and Sayem—attacked the accused with a chair under the orders of another accused, Razzak, while the victim was consulting with the university proctor.

The case also alleged that the accused, Riad, struck him in the face with a switchblade knife with the intent to kill and beat him indiscriminately, causing various injuries across his body.

Earlier on 26 July 2025, Riad had been arrested in Gulshan over an extortion case involving former member of parliament Shammi Ahmed’s residence.
