A female student of Jahangirnagar University (JU) was allegedly blackmailed, confined to a house, and subjected to brutal torture by a former student of the university.

The victim is a student of the 53rd batch of the Public Administration Department, while the accused Tarikul Islam is a former student of the 44th batch of the Institute of Information Technology (IIT).

After she called 999, police rescued her and took her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. A case has been filed in this connection.

The accused, Tarikul Islam, resident of Sarishabari upazila in Jamalpur, remains absconding.

On Tuesday, Tarikul went in front of the hall, created a disturbance, and allegedly forced the female student to go with him to a house in Islamnagar. There he allegedly gagged her by taping her mouth, assaulted her with a hammer, and at one point poured boiling water on her hand, causing burn injuries.

Sources said that when the accused left the room – locking it from the outside – to buy medicine, the student managed to call the national emergency helpline 999 and sought police assistance. Ashulia Police later rescued her and took her first to the JU Medical Centre and subsequently to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

A classmate of the victim told reporters that she received a phone call around 10:00pm informing her of the incident. “I went to the medical centre and stayed there for some time. Later, as far as I know, our other friends took her to Ashulia Police Station to file a case,” she said.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, Rubel Hawlader, said that a case was filed on Wednesday based on the victim's complaint.

“The matter is being investigated with utmost importance and police operations are ongoing to bring the accused to justice,” he added.
