Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti staged a protest procession and held a rally on campus on Friday, demanding justice for the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi and protesting the police assault on demonstrators, including the shooting of Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber.

The procession began from the Bottola area around noon, marched through different campus roads, and ended at the Odomyo 24 monument, where a brief rally was held.

During the march, protesters chanted slogans demanding punishment for those responsible for the police action and questioning the authorities over the attack on student activists.

Addressing the rally, speakers alleged that police attacked students who were peacefully protesting to press home their demand for justice for Hadi’s killing.

Nadia Rahman Annesha, general secretary of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti JU unit, said, “At a time when political parties are busy with election campaigns, we see deliberate attempts to delay the trial of Sharif Osman Hadi’s murder.”

She added, “When Inqilab Moncho laid siege to Jamuna  demanding justice, members of the state force attacked its member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber instead of ensuring accountability.”

She further said, “If the culture of impunity is not dismantled in the post–5 August period, the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives will be rendered meaningless.”

JU unit Chhatra Shakti President Zia Uddin Ayan expressed solidarity with the demand for justice and criticised the police action.

“Police carried out a crackdown on protesters who were peacefully demanding justice for Hadi’s killing, leaving dozens of our brothers and sisters injured,” he said.

He added, “The state has failed to ensure justice, as the charge sheet does not include the alleged masterminds behind the murder.”

He also said, “We demand that the killing of Hadi be reinvestigated under international supervision to ensure a fair and credible trial.”
